nfl concussion, national football leagueA federal judge is forcing the NFL to pay higher disability benefits to retired player Jesse Solomon for injuries and treatments stemming from multiple concussions. The former linebacker – who played for Minnesota, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Miami – claims to have sustained 69,000 full-speed collisions.

High School Student-Athletes at Risk

While the NFL players seem to be on course to receiving proper compensation and treatment, what about the estimated 140,000 high school student-athletes who suffer concussions annually?

Speaking with students recently at Antioch High School, former NFL wide receiver Bobby Shaw – a UC Berkeley star who went on to play for Seattle, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Buffalo and San Diego – said that his high school playing days were “a car crash almost every snap, every play.”

Brain Injury Risks
As Solomon demonstrated, proving the seriousness of traumatic brain injury can often require seeking litigation. In addition to being wide-ranging, the effects of traumatic brain injury can present severe problems for the victim at the physical and psychological levels, including

  • Seizures
  • Blood vessel damage
  • Nerve damage (paralysis, loss of vision, loss of facial sensation, etc.)
  • Loss of vision and other senses
  • Cognitive problems (memory loss, decrease in decision-making processes, difficulty with communication, etc.)
  • Emotional issues (depression, insomnia, mood swings, anxiety)

Symptoms of traumatic brain injury can appear almost immediately after the injury itself, or days or weeks later. The most common symptoms are persistent headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, memory problems and loss of coordination.
